A stock’s dividend yield refers to the expected return of a stock — in dividends — over the course of a calendar year. Yield is presented on a percentage basis of the stock’s current price. For example, if stock XYZ is trading at $100 per share, and it pays a total of $5 in dividends this year, The interest rate you can earn varies by bank as well as by the account you choose. Dividends on a bank account are basically the same as interest payments; the term is most often used at credit unions, as opposed to banks. This is measured primarily by the dividend coverage ratio. If a company earns $100 million and pays out $30 million in dividends, the dividend might be safer than if the company was paying out $90 million in dividends. In the latter case, if profits fall by 10%, there would be no cushion left for management to use.

The quoted rates are applied to balances in the accounts, and financial institutions may pay interest or dividends monthly, quarterly, semi-annually or annually. So, if you have $100,000 on deposit and the account earns a 1 percent interest or dividend rate, you will receive approximately $82 a month.
